Fact Check

We Checked the Two Biggest Claims in Forward Deployed Engineer Recruiting. Neither One Holds Up.

Two of the most-cited numbers in Forward Deployed recruiting — Paraform's “30+ placed at Palantir” and Recruiting From Scratch's “200K job postings” — don't survive a direct read of the source.

In this dispatch
  1. Claim 1: "We've placed 30+ forward deployed engineers at Palantir"
  2. Claim 2: "Real Data from 200K Job Postings"
  3. Why this is worth publishing on its own

The "Forward Deployed Engineer" hiring wave has produced a small industry of recruiters and agencies competing to sound credible about it. Two of the most-repeated claims in that space are also the two most citable — specific enough to sound like evidence, vague enough that nobody seems to have checked them. We checked them.

Claim 1: "We've placed 30+ forward deployed engineers at Palantir"

This is Paraform's headline credibility claim, from their own blog: "We've placed 30+ forward deployed engineers at Palantir, and our recruiter network runs deep across the AI labs."

We read the full post directly. There's no name, no date, no hiring manager, no case study, no link, no verifiable detail of any kind attached to the number. It's a round figure with nothing under it — the kind of claim that's designed to sound like evidence without actually being checkable by the reader. That doesn't make it false. It makes it unverified marketing copy, which is a different thing, and it's currently the single most-cited enterprise placement claim in the entire Forward Deployed recruiting space — nobody else we found makes a specific claim this concrete about a company this well-known.

Claim 2: "Real Data from 200K Job Postings"

Recruiting From Scratch's salary guide leads with this headline. We read the article. The actual analysis behind its own salary figures — median $190K, range $160K–$220K — rests on 135 real job postings, not 200,000. The article never reconciles the two numbers.

It gets stranger. A second, near-identical article on the same site, covering the same topic, uses a different headline denominator: "1.9 Million Job Postings." Same site, same subject, two different eye-catching numbers, neither of which matches the actual sample size used underneath. That's not a typo pattern — it's a signature of programmatic SEO content, where the big number in the title is a hook, not a methodology.

By contrast, the most credible aggregate salary data we found anywhere in this space — Bloomberry's analysis of 1,000 FDE postings, via a disclosed data vendor (Revealera) — states its sample size once, consistently, and shows its segmentation logic. It's not a coincidence that it's also the only source in this category that doesn't inflate its own numbers.

Why this is worth publishing on its own

Neither of these claims is exotic or hard to check — we verified both with a handful of direct page reads. The reason they've circulated unchallenged is that almost nobody writing about this space is checking, because almost everybody writing about this space is selling something in it. That's the actual gap here, not a lack of information: a market this new has more confident claims in circulation than checked ones.

We're going to keep doing this — reading the source, not the summary, before repeating a number. If you're using either of the above two figures anywhere, it's worth a second look.

For the full landscape — who's actually hiring for these roles, in-house vs. agency, verified compensation data, and on-record quotes from the people who run this hiring at Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic, Salesforce, and Intercom — see the companion pieces: "Hiring Forward Deployed Engineers" and "Who Actually Recruits Forward Deployed Engineers?"
